Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What Is Conventional Oil?

Conventional oil, also known as “regular” oil, comes from crude petroleum mined from the earth. It’s a staple of internal combustion engines and is used as a lubricant to reduce engine wear and to help the pistons move smoothly. Oil also prevents your pistons from warping and causing permanent damage due to overheating.

Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil: What Is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil also comes from crude petroleum. However, it is refined much more than conventional oil. In the synthetic oil vs. conventional oil comparison, you need to know that full synthetic oil has more stabilizers, anti-oxidizers, and anti-gumming agents that allow the oil to last longer. That’s why a full synthetic oil change allows you to drive 5,000 to 10,000 miles between oil changes instead of 3,000 miles with conventional oil.

The lone downside? Synthetic oils cost more upfront. But you’ll spend less over the long run because you go for oil changes less often. Full synthetic oils also:

  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Better protect critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)

How Do Full Synthetic Oils vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

Full synthetic oils vs. synthetic blends give you one more option to think about. Synthetic blends contain part synthetic oil and part conventional oil. This will help you reduce upfront costs when choosing between full synthetic oils vs. synthetic blends. But you will get some of the enhanced properties of synthetic vs. conventional oil, just not as much as you would with a full synthetic type.

Note: Some high-performance and new vehicles require full synthetic oil, especially turbocharged engines. Check your owner’s manual or contact usnear Eastland if you need to know what kind of oil your vehicle needs.
